October 9, and the busiest release month in years is a week old. Gears of War: E-Day is out. Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival landed yesterday. Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen arrives today. The full Xbox Game Pass October wave is announced, the PlayStation Plus monthly games are live, and next Tuesday brings the two releases this month will be judged by: a first-person soulslike and the biggest live-service shooter season of the fall.
Last week we ran through the entire October calendar. This week the games are actually here, so this is the state of play: what launched, what is worth your weekend, and what is still to come.
Out now: the week-one launches
Gears of War: E-Day is the month's first heavyweight. It launched October 6 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and it is the centerpiece of Xbox's 2026 lineup. The Coalition and People Can Fly take the series back 14 years before the original game, to the start of the Locust invasion, with Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago at the center. For a series that has been the Xbox identity since 2006, a prequel about day one of the war is the obvious move, and early reception has been kind: reviews praise the campaign's set pieces and the return to the series' horror roots, when the Locust were still unknown and the game still scared you. It is here first, and it is the easiest recommendation of the week for anyone with a Game Pass subscription.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer landed the same day for PS5, Xbox, and PC. Fuse Games and Secret Mode built what the name promises: a racing game in the Star Wars universe with single-player and multiplayer modes and a roguelite structure, so each run changes with your playstyle and achievements. Roguelite progression in a racing game is an odd combination on paper, but it solves the genre's oldest problem, the dead zone between unlocking everything and getting bored. It is the month's one pure arcade pick, and it arrived without the marketing noise of the bigger names.
Horror got its Halloween-season entry on October 8. Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival is out for PC, Xbox, and PS5 from Saber Interactive and Boss Team Games, and the hook is the casting: Doug Bradley returns as Pinhead in a first-person survival horror story. Licensed horror games are usually forgettable, and first-person licensed horror games doubly so. One with the original Cenobite, written with Barker's involvement, is at least worth a look before the Halloween rush buries it.
October 8 also brought Order of the Sinking Star to Switch 2 and PC, a fantasy puzzle game from Thekla Inc. with more than 1,000 puzzles spread across four magical worlds, and the Kingdom Hearts Collection for PS5, Xbox, PC, and Switch 2. Same day, three more games landed day one on Game Pass. Echo Weaver is a metroidvania built around a time loop where knowledge is the upgrade system: you master the loop by exploiting time-altering anomalies, and what you learn carries further than what you collect. Forever Ago is a single-player road trip adventure in which Alfred drives north after a tragedy, camera in hand, meeting people along the way. Neon Abyss 2, the roguelike action platformer sequel, is also on the Premium tier. Three day-one drops in one day, three genres, zero extra cost for subscribers. That is the subscription model working as advertised.
Today, October 9, belongs to Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. Capcom's expansion-scale release hits PS5, Xbox, PC, and Switch 2 with a new snowy region, more dungeons, and deeper character customization. If your October is already full, this is the one that rewards waiting for a sale. Paperhead rounds out today's releases.
The October 13 triple: Valor Mortis, Battlefield 6 Season 5, and Planet Zoo 2
Tuesday is the month's biggest single day, and it starts with the riskiest bet. Valor Mortis is a first-person soulslike from One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner, set in an alternate-history Napoleonic era. You play an undead soldier of Napoleon's army with supernatural abilities, fighting monsters to unravel a conspiracy threatening humanity, and Vincent Cassel voices Napoleon himself.
Why this one matters is the combination. Soulslikes are a crowded genre, and most of them are third-person. First-person changes the formula completely: parry timing becomes about what is in front of your face, not what is around your character, and horror lands harder when there is no camera between you and it. The Napoleonic setting is just as unusual. Most soulslikes live in gothic castles or ruined fantasy kingdoms. A magical aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, with muskets and bayonets next to the supernatural, is territory the genre has barely touched. One More Level earned trust with Ghostrunner's precise first-person combat, which is exactly the skill a first-person soulslike needs.
The game was first dated for September 24 and slipped to October 13. A three-week delay this close to release usually means polish, not panic, and it put the game directly against Battlefield 6 Season 5, which tells you the publisher is not afraid of the competition. It launches day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and it also runs on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld. If it lands, it is the month's conversation piece. If it does not, the setting alone will keep people talking about what could have been.
The same day, Battlefield 6 begins its second year. The game is not new, it launched October 10, 2025, and it was the best-selling shooter of that year. What is new is Season 5, and it is big enough to be October's shooter story alongside the Call of Duty launch. Two maps open the season: a destructible Las Vegas built around casinos, rooftops, and city streets, and an Area 51-inspired military complex that mixes open desert combat with underground tunnels. The season also carries a Dead Space crossover and adds new weapons and vehicles, Platoons, multiplayer leaderboards, Rapid Royale, and Ranked Battle Royale across the season. Platoons are the feature long-time players asked for: persistent squads with their own identity, which is what Battlefield's team play always needed to become a habit instead of an accident. Ranked Battle Royale gives the mode the competitive structure it lacked in year one. It joins Game Pass on October 13 for Ultimate and PC subscribers through EA Play, with an EA Play Deployment Pack, a Season 5 EA Play Pack, recurring seasonal rewards, and 10 percent off eligible EA digital purchases. The timing is deliberate: it lands ten days before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is not coming to the service. Microsoft is handing every Game Pass subscriber a fully stocked shooter ten days before Activision asks them to pay full price for one. That is the whole strategy in a single date.
The quieter third launch on October 13 is Planet Zoo 2 for PC, PS5, and Xbox, and the co-op survival exploration game Deep Dish Dungeon, which is day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC. In Deep Dish Dungeon you and your friends cross a hand-crafted dungeon, gather resources, and upgrade your gear and camp. It is the month's low-key co-op pick.
The indies and oddballs filling out the month
October 15 is the month's variety day. Castlevania: Belmont's Curse arrives for PS5, Xbox, and PC, following Rose Belmont through gothic exploration and combat. Ratatan hits PS5, PS4, Xbox, and Switch 2. Bluey's Happy Snaps lands on Game Pass for Ultimate and PC subscribers, a family game about the famous puppy taking photographs. Chained Beasts is the day-one Game Pass co-op pick: a roguelike with four-player gladiatorial bouts. On October 16, Beyond These Stars comes to PC and Game Pass with one of the year's strangest premises: a management sim where you build a city on the back of a gargantuan space whale.
Later in the month, The Seance of Blake Manor joins Game Pass on October 27 and Terrible Lizards on October 29. Silver Pines is already out from October 8. None of these will move the sales charts, and that is the point. Most Octobers are decided by three or four games, and the rest of the calendar is where the surprises hide. The Game Pass day-one pipeline is exactly how a strange little game finds its audience: it costs subscribers nothing to try, so the barrier between curiosity and a download disappears.
The subscription month: Game Pass and PlayStation Plus
October is a genuinely strong subscription month on both sides. The Xbox Game Pass October wave runs from October 2 to October 29. The full list: Keeper (October 2), Gears of War: E-Day (October 6), Minecraft Dungeons 2 (out now), Echo Weaver, Forever Ago, and Neon Abyss 2 (October 8), Battlefield 6, Deep Dish Dungeon, and Valor Mortis (October 13), Bluey's Happy Snaps and Chained Beasts (October 15), Beyond These Stars (October 16), The Seance of Blake Manor (October 27), and Terrible Lizards (October 29). Seven of these are day-one releases, which is a high count for a single month.
The trade-off arrives October 15, when nine games leave the service: A Plague Tale: Requiem, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Crime Scene Cleaner, Donut County, Evil West, Nova Roma, Pacific Drive, Superball, and The Casting of Frank Stone. If you are mid-way through Clair Obscur or Pacific Drive, the clock is real. Subscribers can buy the departing games at a discount before they go, though Microsoft has not specified the amounts.
PlayStation Plus members get F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896, and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 for PS5 and PS4, claimable from October 6 to November 2. It is a solid month rather than a spectacular one: a racing sim, an extraction shooter, and a co-op bug-blaster.
One rumor worth closing: reports that Microsoft would strip cloud gaming and day-one releases from the most expensive Game Pass tier have been denied. A Microsoft spokesperson told Forbes there are no changes to announce and no finalized plans, and no changes to previously announced day-one games. For this month, at least, the subscription terms hold.
Cloud players are not left out of the month either. NVIDIA's GeForce NOW is adding 25 games to its library through October, so the month's big releases are reachable without a new GPU. Between Game Pass cloud, GeForce NOW, and the PlayStation Plus monthly games, October is one of the cheapest months in memory to play this much.
Still to come: Modern Warfare 4, Phantom Blade Zero, and the GTA 6 shadow
Final Fantasy Resonance arrives October 22 on PlayStation, and Square Enix has kept details close, which for this series usually means a story it does not want spoiled in trailers. Then October 23 brings Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for PS5, Xbox, PC, and Switch 2, the month's other shooter tentpole and the one Microsoft's Battlefield 6 Game Pass play is aimed at. Two massive military shooters landing ten days apart, one on the subscription and one at full price, is the month's real contest, and the player counts will settle it. Phantom Blade Zero closes the month on October 29 for PS5 and PC, S-Game's wuxia action game, after schedule adjustments moved it from earlier in the year. The wait has been long enough that expectations are dangerous, but the combat footage has never been the problem. The Wolf Among Us Remastered lands the same day across PS5, Xbox, PC, Switch, and Switch 2, for everyone who wants Telltale's best season looking like it deserves to.
And over all of it hangs Grand Theft Auto 6. November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox. Take-Two's CEO has stood by the date through two delays, from 2025 to May 26, 2026, to November. Rockstar has not announced a PC version, and it has not confirmed an exact unlock time, so the usual midnight-local assumption is all anyone has. Every publisher in October picked its date with that launch in mind, which is why the month is this crowded: nobody wants to be near November 19, and everyone wants to be the last thing you play before it.
What to play this weekend
The honest answer depends on your mood, and this month there is a right answer for most of them. If you want the big shooter now, Gears of War: E-Day is out and on Game Pass, and the campaign is the draw. If you want horror before Halloween, Hellraiser: Revival is the pick, and it will not be cheaper than it is right now. If you want something quiet, Forever Ago is a road trip with a camera and no fail state worth fearing, the rare game that lowers your heart rate. If you are on Game Pass and undecided, Echo Weaver and Neon Abyss 2 cost you nothing extra to try, and one of them will eat your evening. If you want the RPG, Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen launched today with a new region to get lost in. If you are playing with kids, wait for Bluey's Happy Snaps on the 15th.
And if you can wait four days, Tuesday's triple of Valor Mortis, Battlefield 6 Season 5, and Planet Zoo 2 is the strongest single day of the month. Clear the schedule.
October earned its reputation this year. The first week delivered a prequel, a horror revival, a racing roguelite, and three day-one subscription drops. The rest of the month just has to live up to it, and with a first-person soulslike, a shooter season, and Modern Warfare 4 still to come, it probably will.
